Women's Soccer Goes Undefeated On The Weekend

August 29th, 2009. Alamosa, CO. - The Fort Lewis College Women's Soccer team made their trip home today much easier after stomping Augustana College 4-0 and sweeping this weekend's games in Alamosa. The Skyhawks defeated Northern State on Friday 1-0 in double over-time and still had enough energy to put up four goals against a strong Augustana team.

The Skyhawks were relentless today on the goalkeeper from Augie firing 30 shots total, 17 of those on goal compared to the opponents six shots with two on goal. Fort Lewis struck early when freshman Serena Mancha passed it to junior Erika Shisler on the right side who fired a shot across the goal which banged in off the the left post into the net for the 1-0 score an her first goal of the season. The second gola cam when freshman Elena Benavides and senior Jamie MacArthur connected for a give and go at the right corner of the box giving Jamie her first goal of the season and a 2-0 halftime lead.

The second half once again belonged to the Skyhawks scoring their third goal five minutes into the second half when senior Sam Smith and Elena Benavides assited sophomore Hayley Hollenga on a 20 yard strike into the upper right corner. Twenty minutes later junior GK Christine Schmelzle punted a ball that found it's way past the defenders and onto the feet of Holenga who scored on the breakaway and gave her her second goal of the day and season.

Christina Scmelzle had two saves on the day and recorded her second shutout of the season thanks to the defense who allowed very few shots. The Skyhawks are now 2-0 (undefeated).

The Skyhawks wil be in action this following weekend as they take on Wayne State on Saturday at Dirks Field at 12:00 p.m. and then again on Sunday against the Zias of Eastern New Mexico at 2:00 p.m.
